Medication management continues to be the top "Priority Focus Area" where "Requirements for Improvement (RFI)" have been scored on surveys in 2008. Media events of serious medication errors continue to occur. The key factor for this increase is the lack of implementation of the organization's own policies by medical staff and hospital staff. The top medication management standards and the top medication-related national patient safety goals that were most scored non-compliant on 2008 surveys will be discussed, along with the reasons why and examples of how to achieve compliance. In addition, revised requirements of the medication-management standards for 2009 and 2010, including changes resulting from the Standards Improvement Initiative, and new elements of performance related to the Medicare Conditions of Participation, will be discussed. Also, the new National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) requirements for 2009 will be discussed, as will compliance issues with the new National Patient Safety Goal on Anticoagulation Management, and other National Patient Safety Goals. Finally, the 2010 revisions to the National Patient Safety Goals will be presented.
